LASIK: A Two-Step Process
LASIK is a procedure that reshapes the middle portion of the cornea. In order to get to this middle portion of the cornea, a flap must be created (with either the IntraLase laser or a microkeratome surgical blade) so this outer surface layer can then be moved aside. This is step one. Step two occurs when the laser actually treats (ablates) this middle portion, reshaping the eye for improved vision and a very rapid recovery time.
Custom LASIK: The Difference You May Have Been Waiting For
Custom LASIK is a vision correction procedure that utilizes the unique characteristics of your eye to customize the treatment specifically to you. A sophisticated wavefront analyzer is used to identify different types of irregularities. FDA studies reveal that patients who choose Custom LASIK have a higher probability of achieving sharper and clearer vision, with less risk of night vision problems.
Conventional LASIK: Still Available for Patients That Have Eyes Outside the Custom LASIK Parameters
Along with the laser technology, we use state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment such as WaveScan, CustomCornea Wavefront System, Orbscan and Procyon Pupillometry. To learn more about CustomLASIK, VISX CustomVueTM and LADARVision CustomCornea, please call us directly or schedule a complimintary consultation.
IntraLase®: A Truly Customized Procedure
With the IntraLase® laser, the surgeon uses the precision of a laser to create the corneal flap. This technology allows the surgeon to control many variables during the procedure and provides customization of the corneal flap for every individual patient. IntraLase is so precise it has taken the process of creating the flap to a new level of safety. In addition, IntraLase may now make it possible to treat many patients who were previously not considered candidates for LASIK, due to thin corneas.
NearVisionSM CK®: Lessen Your Dependence on Reading Glasses
Do you find yourself squinting at the menu? Holding the newspaper at arm's length in order to read it? Has it become difficult to read the scores on your golf card? You are not alone. Millions of people over the age 40 find it difficult to see at near without reading glasses. NearVisionSM CK® (Conductive Keratoplasty®) may improve your near vision, allowing you to reduce your dependence on reading glasses. This advancement in treating vision is a brief, outpatient procedure that uses radio frequency (RF) energy instead of a laser. CK may reduce your need for glasses or contact lenses used to see up close or see near. You may find that after having CK, you wear your glasses less or only during certain activities.
Crystalens®: Lets Cataract Patients See All Distances
The Crystalens® intraocular lens (IOL) replacement is a new technology that is designed to mimic the eye's natural ability to focus on distant, middle and near objects. Used in conjunction with standard cataract extraction methods, the Crystalens can restore a full range of functional vision, from distance to reading vision without total dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
99% of Surveyed TLC Patients Would Refer Others to TLC
Back to TopTLC LASIK Patients Have High Satisfaction and Improved Quality of Life
The vast majority of the surveyed TLC Laser Eye Centers patients who had LASIK or other laser vision correction procedures are very satisfied with the results, and most said that the overall quality of their lives and daily routines have improved, according to the results of a recent TLC patient study. TLC's study mirrors the recent Harris Interactive Survey commissioned by the Eye Surgery Education Council (ESEC). That survey was the first nationwide quality of life survey assessing life implications for laser vision correction patients. Both the TLC survey and the Harris survey clearly show that laser vision correction has a profound positive impact on overall quality of life, daily routine, and job performance. However, the TLC survey results outperformed those of Harris in almost all areas, indicating that TLC patients surveyed reported experiencing the highest quality of patient care and achieving excellent results.
CustomLASIK. The Difference You've Been Waiting For
Back to TopThe FDA has recently approved a new technology that will change how your eye doctor views your vision needs. It's called CustomLASIK. CustomLASIK is a laser vision correction procedure that uses the unique visual characteristics of your eye to customize your treatment.
TLC San Antonio uses the VISX Star S4 excimer laser technology that has been used to provide over 5 million LASIK procedures worldwide. Recently, we added this latest technology to diagnose and measure a patient's personal refractive error. This technology, known as the VISX WaveScan gives us a more precise level of detailed information about a patient's vision that has not been previously available. We are confident that our choice in technology along with our doctor's skill will be the most effective way of providing you a successful outcome and great visual results. By using the WaveScan to better understand a patient's unique visual needs, we can determine the best procedure for their eyes.
TLC opened North America's first CustomLASIK center in Toronto, Canada in January 2002. TLC Doctors have been key contributors to the development of this technology. We are one of the first companies to proactively offer our patients the latest in wavefront technology, a personalized approach to vision correction.
Don't wait any longer, find out if you may benefit from CustomLASIK, schedule your consultation on-line or by calling 888.TLC.2020.

Independent U.S. Navy Study Presents Benefits of Custom LASIK Procedure
Back to TopStudy Reflects Results Shown by TLC Custom LASIK Patients
An independent study recently conducted by the U.S. Navy demonstrates that Custom LASIK produces better quality outcomes compared to conventional LASIK for vision correction. The study, the first of its kind, found that 97% of patients treated with Custom LASIK acquired 20/20 vision, versus 88% with conventional LASIK. Custom LASIK can help military personnel see better at night and also avoid the challenges of using glasses or contact lenses in the battlefield. Soldiers who wear eyeglasses must have gas masks with prescription eye inserts that can limit peripheral vision.
Same Technology Approved by NASA is Available at TLC Laser Eye Centers
Back to TopThe National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) has announced the approval of Bladeless Custom LASIK vision correction for their astronauts - the same bladeless custom technology that is also available nationwide at TLC Laser Eye Centers.
NASA's approval came following a review of extensive military clinical data using the same two lasers employed in our Bladeless Custom LASIK. The research showed that the use of the combination of technologies provided superior safety and vision - results TLC Centers agree are unparalleled.
